Thanks for the notes. I did do some considerable homework before trying this on a small scale. I used a cobbled-together transformer supply and a small cell made from a plastic paint bucket. I had hoped to use a battery for heavier currents, (as some sources recommend), but now I'll have to reconsider. The fumes weren't disastrous, but I realize I will need a better-vented area if I scale up.  
 
You say that a battery-charger is a No-No but imply that a 5-10 amp fused power supply is OK. What are the differences? Most of the references I checked (and I did check several) suggested 12 volts for the supply to achieve a current density of 150 ma. per square inch. From what I saw, 18 volts was typical of large, industrial scale baths.  
 
My safety precautions did not include a water hose (good idea), but did include goggles, rubber gloves, and a lot of open windows. I also realize that I'll need a respirator if I work with a larger cell.
