Good to hear you got it somewhat working!  
 
- The layouts on my site (if that's what you're referring to) are all oriented to be printed and used for PNP iron-on transfers. That's why they are backwards. If you're using other methods, you should print the "mirror image". All this and more is described in the "General Build Instructions" on my site.  
 
- The whistle is oscillation. 22 gauge wire is fine, and preferred by some over 24 gauge. Keep the input and output wires well separated and shielded wire on those might help. If you used my layout, I may have the in and outs too close together on the board layout :-( If you built in to perboard, it should be an easy fix, let me know.  
 
- LEDs generally don't light up much when used for clipping, so you're alright there.
