is paint thinner OK to clean the box?

chuck	is paint thinner OK to clean the box? ive tried using paint thinner to clean my metal hammond box before i primed it. afterwords i read that you should use nail polish remover (acetone). is paint thinner no good, or one better then the other?   thanks,   chuck
