| Charlie | First Ge FF... We have put together a FF clone using Ge transistors, PnP AC122's. Looked them up on NTE's site and found they were medium power transistors with NTE102A's as replacements. Using R.G.Keen's paper "Technology of the Fuzz Face", Steve Daniels's "5F-FAQ For Fuzz Face Fanatics" and J.D. Sleeps's Fuzz Face layout as guides we made up our "Ge Fuzz Face" which are all excellent reading and study, highly recommended. Measuring the transistor gains and letting each sit for a bit in the multi-meter, Q1 read 107 and Q2 read 131. We used the values suggested by J.D. for the rest of the board. The box sounds great to my son but seems a bit dark to me, really punches low power cords but seems a bit weak on higher notes. I believe that Q1 needs to be tweaked with a different bais resistor value which presently is 100k, just not sure what to look for as far as value goes. I am still new at this and my son actually plays the guitar, I really enjoy the making of the circuits. Any advice on bring out a little more "brightness" from this puppy? |
