Here's how I get pretty much what you're talking about: You said you have a Boss Metal Zone, right? Well, just add (BEFORE the Metal Zone) a Boss GE-7 EQ between your guitar and amp. You can scoop the mids on the GE-7 and the Metal Zone and be amazed. Important: Leave the main "Level" control FLAT on the GE-7 or it'll give too much hiss. I use this rig through a Marshall JCM-800 on the CLEAN channel, since the dirty channel gives too much "sludge" like this. Play with the GE-7 until you get that nice, defined "chunk" rythym effect. I believe that any decent tube amp will work with this setup and give the desired result.
