This can be as simple as an AA penlite cell holder and test leads with clips, or a regulated DC power supply set to the correct voltage. Connect the test leads of the auxiliary voltage source to the circuit card at the proper points, so that it is in parallel with the on-board button cell pack. Now you can safely remove the old cells, and plug in new ones, without interrupting the memory backup voltage source.
