I think you should build yourself Jack Ormans Mini-Tubes Pre Amp and use it to drive that Blackface!!! You'll be distortion heaven! Not to mention quite a sweet tone if the Bassman is in good shape.  
If the M.T. pre amp has to much dist. for your taste, try a Booster 2.5 or a Sweet Thing.
