Thick Creamy Distortion in a Can
Hello. Do you fellows ever actually use a stompbox to get your distortion? Maybe i have some warped definition of good tone, but i cannot ever get any good sounds from boxes. For Distortion i like the sound of a Mesa (single, dual, or triple rectifiers and nomads), the real thick kind, not too gainy and not too grainy. I really like the distortion sound that i made with my Line6 amp, but i have amps with no distortion, or very little, built in and they sound terrible when i try to add a box. I've used in the past Boss Ds-1, Dod pedals, and currently a Boss metal zone. The amp im trying to get a decent crunch out of is a Marshall Lead 100 MOSFET, and a '65 Blackface bassman (which obviously wont crunch, but a nice overdrive would be sweet). Is there some wierd thing i dont know about pedals that's making them sound bad? Maybe i am hearing the tone loss from not plugging straight in, but i doubt it. What do you fellows think?
