Re: effects on a trombone
Gordon Fowler played trombone for Zappa, Beefheart, et.al. He experimented quite a bit with wah and effects, and I thought it was pretty cool. Check him out.

One thing that has only been briefly touched on is the problem of feedback. Understand what it is, and understand how to minimize it. You may blow up your amp and your ears if you don't.

One thing that will help will be standing at least 10 ft. from your amp with your back to it, whenever possible. Another aid would be a highly directional microphone ("supercardioid, etc."). The most helpful would be a crossover network with a piezo driver (like a woofer-tweeter combination for home stereo). Anyone who's ever plugged an acoustic guitar into a Twin knows what I'm talking about.

If you can, take your 'bone into a music store. That's how most folks learn the basics (what different "stombpoxes" do, how to connect things, etc.).
