I have had both the Whirlwind and Morley A/B/Y boxes that popped with the battery installed and were quiet without. The battery is present ONLY to activate the LEDS through the second half of the DPDT. The 1 Meg resistors didn't work. I surmised that the minute "arc" when the battery gets connected to the LED is what was causing the pop. Of course I could be wrong.
