matching transistors
Hi I am trying to get my transistors matched for my compressor, I have 2SC2901 which is a sub for a 2SC1849, that I have found at americansemiconductor, but in trying some out they dont sound the same as the original 1849's (2SC1849)do in the same circuit, is it possible the quality has gone bad or production has changed or perhaps they change over time? THe 2SC2901 sounds a little thin compared to the 2SC1849 and a little less gain, is this possible? and can I correct this by matching transistors? The Americansemiconductor prices are high $3.00 ea.for the 2SC1849. The 2SC2901 are $ .29 ea.from MCM. Is there any other alternatives? I also have CDE poly caps in there as opposed to the ceramic coupling caps that are original, can this have much affect on tone? THe CDE caps sound like there is more highs coming through also more hiss, could this be due to the transistors? Any help appreciated!

Thanks!
Ed
