mike, you might want to get a 25 watt iron.  
not that you can't do the job with a bigger one,  
but the smaller one is more suitable for  
transiostors and suchlike.  
 
if the leads are clean, iron hot etc, the joint should form in a couple of seconds... if it takes  
longer you're in danger of cooking something.
