John, I was too, until doing some research (mostly at Mr. Keen's !) convinced me that, when done right (like in Boss pedals) there isn't enough difference to worry about. Good jfet-swithches "touch" the signal with 10 to 100 ohms.If you add a 10 foot when you use the box, are you hearing the bypass, or the extra cable? How would you know? There's more damage done to the signal by a 30 foot guitar-cable, IMHO.  
 
When you string together 5 to 7 effects boxes with 10 to 20 feet of cable, 10 to 20 jack connections, include some older designs in there (that don't adhere to the high-impedence in, low-impedence-out modern standard) I don't think the bypasses are the problem. :)
