It allows you to pretty much take the mono component out of your mix and just leaves whatever is left in the right and left channels, giving a pseudo-enhanced stereo image. It's subtle and not quite as good as some older vintage units that I'll never get my hands on (were they called Base or something like that?) The Paia Stereo Spreader does a similar effect, not that the Edison isn't cheap enough as it is. Roger
