You are correct in your assumption that the FM keeps your amps sounding pretty much the same as without it but with more gain. However the sound, of mine at least, is colored when the effect is on. So I guess in all essence you aren't getting exactly the same amp sound just overdriven. I like the sound of the pedal better than my 808. I have thought of buying a regular fulldrive 2 just to a/b the FM with it. I bought mine used so I never got the instructions. It has an alkaline battery in it at this time. I will try a carbon one and get back to you. Hope this helps. M/J
