The funny thing was passive DI's would absolutely NOT work with this thing (no bass at all, and I've never had that problem before...), but an active DI OR one with a SHO in front would be fine. I'm used to them little preamps being able to drive a passive DI (though it might cost you some tone, but hey, were talking live and dirty here), but this one obviously couldn't.
