Thanks for the link.  
I have tried to build a Rangemaster, and I did follow R.G.Keens article on tweeking the Rangemaster to get it to perform correctly. the trouble was I couldn't get a AC128 or even a BC549 to have enough gain to operate correctly.  
 
As I'd still like to build a Rangemaster all advice wellcome.
