Boss DS-1 is a must have pedal, especially at the $39 or $49 they go for new discounted.     For me, Fulltone '69 pedal is also a great fuzz/overdrive.     1/3 rack space Alesis Microverb is the simplest mono reverb/overdrive I've found.     The DanEcho is also great and gives 95% of an echoplex in a small pedal.
