I looked at the connection diagram on the Shaka 3 schematic. The way you have it connected, the 1N34a is blocking conduction through the normal channel and you only have the reverse diode of the mosfet capable of passing a signal.  
 
One thing to keep in mind is that the Vf of the reverse diode is similar to a silicon diode (0.65v) and the normal mosfet g/d to s is much higher (3.8v). Measurements are from an IRF510 @ 7.5 ma.
