I checked into getting Hammond boxes chromed at a local plating shop (Victoria, BC). I was told it would cost up to $15 a piece-too rich for me. I've also tried polishing the raw metal boxes with mixed results.  
 
My favorite cheapo trick is to use the tops of dead batteries as battery clips (not my origional idea, I saw it on someone's web site, can't remember which).
