Re: Roger Mayer Interview - random responses
Regarding the TONE BENDER, I have information that might be usefull:
The first T'Bender was built by Gary Hurst a technician at Macari's Music Store in London in 1964, The device was built into a basic aluminum sheet formed box with two pointer knobs for level and attack, a foot switch. producing a crude rasping fuzz, Among the first recording this unit was used on were PJ Proby's "Together" 1964, guitar by Jimmy Page. The Yardbirds "Heart Full Of Soul" (1965, guitar by; J.Beck). Prior to The Tone Bender Gary Hurst developed a Buzz Box, used in the Yardbirds song "Over, Under, Sideways, Down" The Buzz Box was a unpopular product. With a little more R&D the tone was improved and rename into the Tone Bender. The original Tone Bender used a couple of OC76 germanium transistors. Larry Macari at one time worked for Vox as a Sales Representative, after he left Vox in 1964 He set up his own shop and thereafter Colorsound, both Macari's and Colorsound where divisions of Sola Sound Ltd., Sola Sound Ltd., also produced another range of effects pedal under the Label Eurotech
Colorsound produced a Newsletter letter called PEDAL POWER I have only ever seen one and that was the first issue. It promoted about 15 different Colorsound products. Based on what I have read I think Gary Hurst should be considered the originator of the footswitch floor type effects pedal. But that is my opinion. If there is any interest I can scan up the information and colour pix of the vintage colorsound and Eurotech range of products.
