Opamps and life
Hello,

This is no question, just some thoughts on op-amps. I once used a NE5532 in a tube screamer, and after a while it (ts, not the 5532) died. It seems that the +/- 4.5 v supply is not enough to run some opamps. I guess many use TL072, which min. supply voltage is also +/- 5.0 V. So I found these opamps could be a better choice for a stop box (with min. supply voltage):

TL062 (+/- 2.5V)
MC33077 (+/- 2.5V, low noise)
MC4558 (+/- 3.0V, standard for TS-xxx)
LM385 (+/- 1.5V, but noisy)
MC33072 (+3.0V, single supply)
MC33102 (+/- 2.5V, Sleep Mode(tm) Micropower)
MC33172 (+/- 3.0V, low power)
MC33272 (+/- 1.5V)

It also seems that most of these are quite slow. The slew rate for 4558 is 1.6V/uS,
TL062 is 6.0V/uS, TL072 13V/uS.

MC33102 is interesting with it's sleep mode (does this mean if fells asleep if your guitar solos are not that interesting?). Anyway, it's quite close to 4558 with a slew rate of 1.7 vs 1.6 of 4558, bandwidth of 4.6 MHz vs 2.8 MHz of 4558, IIB 0.5uA vs 0.6uA (when it's awake). That sleep mode would be nice, if you don't remember to pull off that cord.

So any comments?

-Mikko
