It's how smoothly it goes from no conducting to saturation. Ge will make it softly ("soft knee"), Si will make it abruptly ("hard knee"). OK, I got it, thanks. So the Fuzz Face is dying technology, and it's better to start searching for those Ge trannies. Luckily I found a good source for 2SA12 transistors. Of 10 2SA12's I measured three had the gain of about 90 (88, 2x 90), three were at about 75's, three 57 and one had gain of 23. Anybody tried these before?
