Garry, at my web site is a whole discussion on the concept of tube bias. In general, I have found that to prolong tube life, and to prevent or at least minimize cathode bias resistor blow up(due to tube thermal runaway), I bias lower(less current = more negative bias voltage). This seems to work, and still keep the amp in class A or close to it. In any event it does not seem to affect the sound much, and definitely gives the tubes and amp less stress.
