Re: Jap tube amps---ECHO twin amp
What you have is an Amp by the Miyuki Ind. Co. which was made in the mid 60's in Japan. They were more commonly named ELK and are described in the book "The Amplifier" by Rittor Music Mook on page 92(unfortunately in Japanese only). It sounds as if you have a Model EB 212 from 1966. I have an Elk model EB 105 from 1965 -also labeled "Pro-Sonic" on the front. It has similar circuitry to an early Fender Vibroverb (including non-optocoupled vibrato). You are right about it sounding good- although mine sounds MUCH better with Celestions in it. The stock speakers were pretty weak. I also changed the reverb driver tube from a 12AX7 to a 12AU7 which reduced harshness. Mine is point to point wired and all the resistors are wire wound. The useage of several oil caps also indicated that there was some thought behind the design. Mine is rated at 18 W into 2-8 ohm speakers with EL34 power tubes and 5AR4 rectifier. The Reverb channel is VERY bright, sounds much like a Fender Deluxe Reverb. I think these never had a US distributor but a few came back with GIs stationed in Japan (a lot of Guyatones came back this way - also a cool Japanese amp-check out the cover photos on "THE VENTURES-LIVE IN JAPAN")
These are not as rugged as Fenders so need a little TLC. Sincerely, Stephen Cowdery, AKA Dr. Fuzz.
