They allow the tubes to reach proper operating temperature to avoid cathode stripping, and they allow the tubes to 'idle' when the amp is not in use. So it should be better to leave the amp in standby. In fact there are some old Hi-Fi amps that do not have a standby switch - they are in standby the moment you plug them in! GVB
