Very good choice, though a little bit pricey.

"Can I somehow use effects loop to get good distortion at low volumes? How about some kind of load between power AMP and the speaker or in paralell with speaker? I'm looking for some solution other than than a distortion pedal in front."

Budda amps are designed to have just enough pre-amp gain to get better articulation.
See http://www.budda.com/twinmaster.html,
the third paragraph. I think you should send email to Buddatone@aol.com ( or call to (415) 492-1935) and ask their opinion on addition of triode mode (pentode/triode switch). Budda is a small company, and I think they are eager to serve customers in this kind of questions.

Another way to get more distortion at lower volume could be to use resistors in parallel and in series with the speaker. If the speaker is 8 ohms, connect one 25W 16 ohm resistor in parallel with the speaker and a 25W 8 ohms resistor in series with the speaker.
