ethRe: Increasing overdrive in Sov mig 50
Hey man, I put in a variable resistor of 250k in series with the feedback resistor of my Fender Bandmaster. (I'll bet the two are quite similar). That mod is so quick and gives such a cool effect to both distortion and clean modes that I think I might put one for each channel and switch with an ldr!
For increasing preamp gain, look to see if there are any unbypassed cathode resistors.(capacitor paralell with resistor). if you add a cap. gain will increase.
One thing I like to do is take the first distortion stage and lower the cathode resistor value to 1k or so,(increases current and gain) then the second stage I increase the cathode resistor value to, for example 4.7k from 2.2k. Raising the cathode resistor decreases gain, buty it also decreases signal headroom, thus causeing it to distort sooner (and harder). I find that this will give a nice, crisply saturated sound with low noise in many cases. Those are my suggestions, everyone is looking for a different tone though so... later-Eth
