| TAP | Re: what's a good amp for bass? Well Rob, I'm a bass player who LOVES tube equipment and all of the posts so far are valid! I would not consider a Bassman to play bass (at any loud levels at least). I have owned the top equipment: SWR and Eden and now I'm playing through a '73 Sunn Model T. The only reason for this is that the Sunn has "good" grind with a Fender Jazz. If you're set on building a tube amp, then consider 6550's or KT88's for the cleanest tone (although I am rethinking my position on this since Hiwatt's are now preferred by many bass players and they use EL34's for the Custom 100 heads). And get the biggest transformers you can fit in the chassis. Trace, I have heard the new Sunn "SVT" clone and it does sound pretty good (but I question the build quality)it was a bit too "Hi Fi" sounding to me (If you want HiFi then Eden does it the best). Hope this helps you some and let us know what you decide to do! tap |
