Re: what's a good amp for bass?
A tube power amp for bass can be nice but is very expensive to built. Besides this, getting hold of a 200-300 W output transformer with a base frequency of 20-40 Hz is not easy (or cheap). Like the others said, 2xEL34 is just not enough.

A friend of mine built the preamp of the Mesa Boogie Bass (is in The Tube Amp Book) and uses it with a 2x300W Mosfet power amp. It sounds absolutely great. Very fat but defined and a really tight bottom end (which is harder to achieve with valves).

He also has a Trace Elliot 350W 6x6550 amp which sounds really cool (SVT) but is just too expensive to retube (we're students you know), so he does hardly ever take it to gigs.

Hope this helps
