Remove the second 470pf bleeder cap, and install a .68uf cathode bypass cap on the following triode to make up for the lost gain.  
This trick makes the 2204 sound more like a 1987, but with more gain. It also helps to change the cap across the preamp volume pot from a .001uf to a 470pf.
