| Craig | Re: Champ improvements One thought would be to consider your power filter capacitance values. Generally speaking, more filtering creates tighter, deeper low end. I recently rebuilt a small Kalamazoo 'Champ-type' amp (5Y3/6BQ5/12AX7) and went with 80mmf for the 1st stage of filtering (the one that feeds the center tap of the output transformer). Great low end. There are limits, however. I have heard it said that in general, no more than 100mmf for filtering the B+ supply. But look at schematics - in particular, check out the Mesa-Boogie and Dumble pages in Pittman's book. There are apparently acceptions to this rule of thumb. Good luck! Craig |
