BrendanRe: More Marshall modding (will it ever end?)
Hi,

I have a '74 50 watt non-master, and the same complaint. I find the sound is greatly improved by turning the bass down to around 2. Oddly enough, this doesn't really impact the overall bass output under moderate to heavy distortion, but really brings out the chunk.

I have been using bass on 2, mid at 8-10, treble around 2-3, and presence depending on my mood, but generally low. This seemed at first like the wrong approach to me, but it works pretty good. I run straight in to the treble hi gain input on 8-10, bridged the inputs and normal channel volume on 6-10, depending on guitar.

Another way to tighten up the bass response for a nice thick chunk is to use a dstortion pedal. Try them before you buy. I've got an older Boss SD-1 and it truly stinks.

Regards and good luck.
