| Michael | Re: The Sound of Overvoltage? Hello Doc and DCH, I'm the guy who started this thread. I have the power resistor setup in my amp (although 100ohms per side, since I don't have 2 250ohm resistors in hand. It is time for another order though...). Anyway, I did notice a change in the tone after I added the resistors. And, yes, you only notice it at high volume. But it adds a softness to the pick attack when you crank it that feels so good. Makes me think I sound like Eric Johnson. (It is the only thing that I have in common with him.) BTW, I'm still considering the big zener trick, as the idle plate voltage on my 2-6V6 (6EY6, actually - sound great, and CHEAP!!) runs about 450V. I know, I know, I'm way out of spec. But i gigged with this amp last weekend - a 4 hour gig - with no ill effects. Regardless, I would feel a lot more comfortable with 400V - 420V. I'll probably lose some "spank" but gain some reliability. Certainly gain some comfort level. Michael |
