With no load connected the output transformer just looks like a big inductor... with a suitable resistive load the current in the tube is high when the voltage across it is low (and vice versa), minimizing the power dissipated, but with a purely inductive load the phase relationship between I and V is changed, and power dissipated by the tube goes up... how much impedance is too much, I don't know... the only time I've had a problem was with an accidentally disconnected load, cooked a 6L6 and one of its grid resistors... -art |
