They started making the AC30/4 with a 12ax7 later because of mechanical problems with the EF86. This was caused by bass players using AC30's and vibrating the tube too much. It states that players noticed a difference in sound when using the new AC30/4 w/ the 12ax7 preamp. Vox in return added another 12ax7 making the Top Boost (sounds good but it's not the same).
